Health Insurance For College Is Crucial
My mom had lost her job and started working from home when I was a senior in high school, and we never had health insurance as a family after that. When I started college, I had to have health insurance coverage, so I bought the package the school offered, and that was very expensive. While I was in school, I got a full-time job working for a company that sold motorcycles. On my first day at work, I filled out paperwork to purchase the health insurance the company offered. I was happy that the employee cost was only a small fraction of what the school insurance cost each month. I dropped the insurance I was purchasing from school.
Right away I picked a primary care physician and made an appointment for a wellness check. I hadn’t had a physical in years and really needed one. I was glad to know that I had a primary care physician and would see the same person anytime I got sick.
About three months into my job the company started having some financial issues. The owners didn’t want to lay off any employees. One of the first things they did to help their bottom line was drop their health insurance coverage. There I was once again, without health insurance right along with all of my co-workers.
This was a real problem for one of my co-workers in particular because his wife was pregnant. For a few hundred dollars a month he could buy COBRA insurance that would only cover her pregnancy and the delivery. If he and his wife wanted full insurance for the whole family that would cover everything, the cost of COBRA would have been 2-3 times higher. Since he couldn’t afford that, he had to find another job. He still had a problem, though, because his new company didn’t offer an HMO and his wife’s pregnancy still wasn’t covered. So to cover everyone and everything, he had to buy the company insurance for family health care and COBRA insurance to specifically pay for the pregnancy.
